our first lice experience

I say “first” because who knows? it might happen again. In fact, it probably will.

So, apparently one or more of the girls got lice from a summer camp. I had never seen lice nor knew what it looked like. However, I have heard friends talking about it– something about combing and stuff. Combing? What special combs?

I always wondered when my time would come….

I didn’t know the girls had lice until someone at church who sat behind us noticed them and told me about it. I’m so glad she told me!

So we went home from church and it started.

We started with some shampoo from the pharmacy. In the shampoo box was The Comb. It’s just a very-small-tinned plastic comb. We did the shampooing, and Vitaliy got out the microscope that a friend had gifted us that has stayed in the shelf until the kids were a bit older.

That microscope with lice is awesome. You can see what’s dead and what’s alive. You can also crush the lice with a fingernail and see if it “pops” to know if it’s dead or alive.

I packed away the couch pillows (where the girls spend a lot of time, and most of the bedding. We slept with sheets so we could wash them daily in hot water. The laundry at first was mountainous. And it took forever, washing things in very hot water.

I also bought Tea Tree oil, poured a bunch with water into a water bottle and sprayed–couches, mattresses, hair, seats, etc. I closed up the girls couch-bed, and they can’t use it untl the appx three weeks are over.

We did the special lice shampoo. Also vinegar with water. Then a lice-spray-thing that supposedly kills everything in one blow. We got dog flea shampoo. And finally, after a week, we decided just to do either WD-40 or diesel. We went with WD-40. We did all of this on everyone Vitaliy buzzed his head, though he didn’t have it, and he buzzed Andre’s head, though he didn’t have it.

blue gloves to wear while combing, dog flea shampoo, combs/brushes in rubbing alcohol (turned blue from brush colors coming off, Para-Plus lice spray.

I honestly did not comb a lot. I did some. Una was easy–fine, short hair (I gave her a cute bob cut, too!) The girls– it was crazy. Vika has very long hair, and Skyla has an extremely sensitive head. After the WD-40, things were dead, dead, dead. Even though empty egg shells were still on their hair.

One day, the last day, we combed in the kitchen at the light, so I could see. We combed for hours. And we cut out every single strand (and a few others) of hair that had an egg on it and checked them all under the microscope. Skyla helped me do this and she was such a help! she checked them all.

see the little, white speck?

Dead, dead, dead.

So, that was our lice experience so far. I’m still being watchful as it’s only been 2-3 weeks. Still doing the dog flea shampoo sometimes, still washing sheets and pillow cases every day. Keeping things bagged up.  We’ll see if it’s over. 🙂

designing our apartment

God’s blessed us with an apartment! It’s a two-story penthouse 😉 We’re the top floors of the building–floors 23-24. We joke that it’s a true sokol’s nest– “sokol,” our last name, means “falcon.”

It’s a new building, which is wonderful, that it’s not the standard, soviet fare apartment but one with a newer design and fresh floor plan. It has TWO larger-sized bathrooms that are one room– the bath and toilet in the same room instead of separate, as usual.

It’s 1,378 square feet (128 sq feet).

With it being a newly built building, we design and install every. single. thing. (Well, the windows and radiators are already there. and electricity for lighting and outlets. But otherwise, it’s brick walls.

Our first steps are to decide … everything! We have to figure it all out in a very detailed way so that we can know right where we electrical outlets, what ceiling lighting and where, light switches– all that will have to be wired into into the walls first. And we decide what inner walls we want to remove or build new ones.

Vitaliy downloaded this cool program so we can do all that. It works in 2D and then switches to 3D, too.  IItItsIt is such a load of brain work. I’m exhausted! and exhilarated! It’s going to take a lot of stamina to get it all done, but it will be a huge blessing once it’s all ready.

I have a great sense of intimacy with Vitaliy while we plan this. It’s such a joy to do it together, to have ideas, not yell, fight or criticize each other.

The kids enjoy it, too.

I might do something like this in a corner of my kitchen:

And studying the science of well-organizing a small space has really helped me with the apartment we live in now–to clean and organize it better.

Thank you, God.

Zametki o Charlotta Mason: Ya istochnik

Notes on Charlotte Mason: I am the source

This quote in CM’s book, School Education, describes the deficit (or lack) I’m feeling in myself about educating my children.

As a stream can rise no higher than its source, so it is probable that no educational effort can rise above the whole scheme of thought which gives it birth.

If I’m the primary source and guidance of my children’s education, then our “educational effort” will meet or be lower than … me, and my understanding, vision for, and acting out upon their education.

And sadly, lo, for these 5+ years of home schooling, I’ve not had much of a vision of what on earth education is, why it’s important, what I’m trying to accomplish, etc. We have accomplished things, I will say. The girls are good readers, Vitaliy keeps reminding me.

But ….

There is so much more. And that is what I need to get clearly into focus.

Also, it kind of annoys me that I often say that we need to “do school.” Like school equals learning, and learning is some isolated activity (math lessons, book reading, etc).  “Do school” annoys me for a good reason.

A theory of education … must regard education, not as a shut-off compartment, but as being as much a part of life as birth or growth, marriage or work; and it must leave the pupil attached to the world at many points of contact.

Maybe I should say, “We need to get busy with one part of our learning….”

polovina goda molitvi

half of the year of prayer

God led me this year to not set any Bible reading goals or plan and just to spend a year focusing on my prayer life.

God was several years in leading me to this year. This year of learning more to pray.

I’m at the end of the fifth month of this year. And some of the greatest events of our life have happened in these five months.

1.) Prayer. 2) Huge life events.

Around month three (March), I realized these two factors are tightly interrelated.

The humbling lesson is that I really pray with so little faith. I’ve started to think that faith “like a mustard seed” is just putting something on my prayer list– I have some level of faith, I guess, that I even put it on the list, though I feel like I then pray with no expectation or belief that it will really ever happen …

So, it’s been a happenin’ year, we could say.

I wanted to record the enormous-to-me things that have happened so far this year.

  1. We’ve added some supporters. We’re almost half-way to where we need to be financially.  It doesn’t sound big, but it’s been a process of seeing God lead me in various, personal ways that has been really neat.
  2. We applied for Vitaliy’s Green Card…. After thought and prayer, we had decided not to do this, but I keep it on my prayer list and was “mentioning” it to God for direction, and that direction came when Vitaliy’s visa was twice denied. We applied for a Green Card. It’s a big move for us.

3. I wrote a small book. I wasn’t even praying about this specifically, but I think it’s more related to praying about being more fruitful. This book details the relational, sanctificational steps God led me through in my early years of motherhood.  It’s still it the editing stages. I’m trying not to hurry.

4. Vitaliy and I both moved into being more open to fostering or adopting a child. I’ve been praying about this for years. I still don’t know if it will ever happen, but we’ve shifted in this to being more open and ready.

5. We are actually buying an apartment– actually an apartment that has enough room for us all (and a few more)! This amazes me. It’s been on the list, I’ve dutifully mentioned it to the Lord,  but I’ve not believed it would really happen. And the amazing thing is that it happened in a way that it made us open to spending money on having more room to live in, which has been a growing need.  (I want to write a whole post about this experience.)

Signing papers.

Good thing the bank has a big money counter thingy.

6. I asked Clay Clarkson about getting his book, Heartfelt Discipline, translated into Rusisan, and he is! Even now! This is so wonderful to me! This book had a great impact on my thinking towards my children that really helped me become more Christlike. He’s even willing to make a corresponding video series through the book, plus translate others of their books!

7. God’s been giving me opportunities to witness to people.

I’m laying on the floor, figuratively speaking, in amazement over all this. It’s been quite a year.

Blessed

I’m blessed

These last months and years, I am feeling that I’m blessed. I don’t just logically accept that it must be true– my emotions have united to the truth, and I FEEL that this is true. (Meaning, I don’t just accept it by faith, even though I feel the opposite.)

These last few days, I ‘ve been thinking about how wonderful it is to be led in the paths of righteousness with this man.
Yes, my cup overflows.

blazhen

Andrew Murray Domashnaya Shkola

AMH: Andrew Murray Homeschooling

It’s a new philosophy, ya’ll.

….

That’s a joke 😀

Earlier this year, I read Murray’s With Christ in the School of Prayer, and I wrote some quotes down to pray over in my prayer pages. One quote is this:

Take possession of my heart, and fill it with the desire to glorify God in the gathering, sanctification, and union of those whom the Father has given You [the Son].

Weeks ago, when I first read that, my honest reaction was, man, how boring is that? Because wow, there are a lot more interesting things to aim for and think about now, aren’t there?

Well, then I tried to be more spiritual and have a neutral reaction.

But then I was also impressed to write that into my prayer pages and pray over it, because really, isn’t that what God is really interested in and actually doing on earth here?!?!  And God’s been working on my heart, trying to teach me to be His friend and be interested in what He is interested in, rather than just kind of demanding that He be interested in what interests me.

God is so patient, you know? Sheesh.

Take possession of my heart.

Fill it with the desire to glorify You

in 1) the gathering, 2) sanctification, 3) and union of those whom the Father has given You.

And as I wrote out this prayer, it blazed upon me that this, this! is the guiding plan for our home generally and my homeschooling in particular–that I and my kids will be saved, sanctified and unified with the Body and Person of Christ.

It’s nothing new, but like I learned in Creative Writing, we don’t write new things, we just express old truths in new ways.

God is laying the foundation, ya’ll. A wise woman builds her house, and unless God builds the house, the workers labor in vain.
